We reached the emissions target years ahead of schedule
Bauer Media Outdoor Finland has reduced its scope 1 and 2 emissions from 2022 by as much as 96% by the end of 2024 - compared to a 90% reduction target by 2030.Thecompany's Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) adopted a 90% cut in emissions from its own operations and purchased energy by 2030 as its science-based emissions reduction target. This was achieved six years early, with a 96% reduction from 2022 levels.
Emission reductions have been achieved primarily through actions that reduce emissions in absolute terms - without emission credits
Bauer Media Outdoor Finland has significantly reduced emissions from its own operations. These reductions have been achieved mainly through direct measures that reduce emissions in absolute terms. No emission credits have been used as part of the implementation of the reductions.
One important factor has been the vehicle policy, which requires new cars entering the company to be either hybrid or fully electric. By 2024, 75% of the vehicle fleet was already hybrid or fully electric under this policy. The electrification of the vehicle fleet will continue with the aim of moving to fully low-emission alternatives.
All electricity used will come from renewable energy sources. Close cooperation with a network of partners will be established to ensure the origin of electricity for advertising equipment. District heating of buildings will be based on district heating from renewable energy sources. Certificates of origin are available for both electricity and district heating, confirming the renewable origin of the energy.
Towards net zero emissions throughout the value chain by 2045
Bauer Media Outdoor's overall goal is to achieve net zero emissions across the value chain by 2045 for all its European operations. the long-term goal is to reduce scope 3 emissions by 90% compared to 2022 levels.
"Climate change is one of the biggest risks and we want to act responsibly and take active steps to reduce our carbon emissions. We are constantly looking for more energy-efficient solutions, advertising equipment with less environmental impact and we are developing our activities to manage our environmental impact. Our work is supported by the ISO 14001 environmental management system integrated into the business, which guides systematic development," says Lassi Tolonen, CDO of Bauer Media Outdoor.
Reducing emissions in the supply chain is part of our sustainability work, which also extends to our cooperation with partners. "To reduce emissions in other parts of the value chain, we work closely with key suppliers. We strive to develop the lowest possible emission advertising equipment , while at the same time extending its life cycle, for example through regular maintenance and repairing equipment with spare parts instead of new whenever possible," concludes Operations Manager Sami Rantanen.
